Laundry room organization in a small space

Writer's picture: sarah&britsarah&brit

I live in a 120 year old farm house and if you live in an old house as well you know the pain I feel with the lack of storage space and all the other quirks old houses bring. Don’t get me wrong, I love my house and all the character and charm it has.

As you can see from this photo, I have a laundry “closet” not a laundry room, so I had to get creative with my storage. This space bothers me a lot because I love when things are organized but the top of the washer and dryer seem to be a catch-all for everything around here. It was driving me nuts!

When I look at organizing a space I always go for budget friendly. So instead of purchasing cabinets to go above the washer and dryer I had these pipe shelves that used to hang in my kitchen. They fit perfect and I am able to use cute baskets and decorations on them as well.

I also have this weird space on the side of the dryer that stuff would just get thrown into with no rhyme or reason. One day as I was standing there staring at the space and the clutter, trying to decide how to organize, a light bulb went off and I measured the space beside the dryer. Just as I thought, I could buy some small cube shelves to put there and have a lot more storage. I found 2 of the 3 cube organizers that would fit and ordered them. I purchased them from walmart.com and they work perfect! I stacked them on top of each other and screwed them together so I wouldn't have to worry about the top one slipping off the bottom one.

I also purchased an edge glued board from Menards for the top of the washer and dryer. I have always wanted a solid top for them but a countertop or piece of carerra marble wasn't really in my price range. This board was 6 feet long and I cut it down to 5 to fit my space. It works perfectly and finishes off the space so well. I am planning to paint it white with a gray wash over the top of it to break up all of the wood tones I currently have.

I hope you find some inspiration from my small space and are able to organize your space to feel cozy and put together. Nothing frees the mind like organized spaces!
